Spring 2003 Upgrade

DirecTV® is making a change to the program guide data used by UltimateTV® to schedule recordings. The Summer 2007 Update has been released to maintain compatibility with the DirecTV service so your UltimateTV will continue to record programs as expected. Without the update, your UltimateTV may record the wrong program or miss recording a program.

You should receive the update automatically over the satellite. This is the normal way of receiving upgrades, and is the easiest, most trouble-free method. However, occasionally it is necessary to upgrade using a telephone line. If after September 15, 2007 your UltimateTV has not installed the 3.8 update, and is not recording programs as expected, you may need to set up your unit to get the update using this alternative method. If you are setting up an UltimateTV after this date, allow several days for a satellite update to take place before considering this method.

First, check to see what software version you have installed. You can find this listed on the System Information page. The steps are listed below for easy reference.

  • Step 1: Press the Home button on your remote control.
  • Step 2: Select Settings at the bottom left of the screen.
  • Step 3: Select the System Test button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Step 4: Select the System Info button at the bottom left of the screen. The software version is listed on the System Information screen next to the Client SW: label. It should read 3.8 (version 28230) or greater.

If you do not have the latest version and need to upgrade using the telephone line, you must connect your UltimateTV directly to a standard telephone line. Please note that a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) telephone line will likely not work. Also, a power line telephone adapter is not recommended for software upgrades since it will reduce the chance of success. It is best to connect a telephone line directly between the wall jack and your UltimateTV.

The update requires a telephone call of at least 70 minutes, so it is best to upgrade at a time when you don't expect to receive any telephone calls. Telephone calls made by your UltimateTV to upgrade the software are normally free, as long as your box is not configured to use your own ISP (Internet Service Provider). If you intend to use your own ISP, it is your responsibility to verify that your box is configured to dial a local telephone number. You can ensure that your UltimateTV is configured to use MSN® as your ISP by selecting the No ISP button on the Use your own ISP screen in the Phone options section of Settings.

To upgrade using the telephone line, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Connect a telephone line to the back of your UltimateTV.
  • Step 2: Press the Home button on your remote control.
  • Step 3: Select Web Home at the left side of the screen.
  • Step 4: Your UltimateTV will place a phone call to get the update. If your box is not currently registered with the MSN service you, will have to register at this time. Please note that a credit card is required to register, but you will not be charged if you do not use the MSN service in excess of 3 hours per month. There is no charge for software updates or for the time spent downloading an update.
  • Step 5: If your UltimateTV does not have the latest software, it will download and install the update at this time.
